I was laid off by a company, then asked to come back and do contract work.Do I need a business license?
The work is just labor and I dont buy parts and resell them I have them but the parts and I install them. In as much as I am nearing retirement I am considering just not looking for a full time job and just do contract work. All I need is a bigger customer base so I dont have to depend on just one customer. I need information on what is needed to do this type of work. It involves refrigeration and testing chambers. How do I find customers? and what do I legally need for a sole proprietorship in los angeles?
personally, i would file an eeoc age discrimination complaint. what your company did was basically say you can still work for us, just not as 1 of OUR employees, so if you are close to retirement, you just lost what you worked for, because the company owes you no retirement because you were not 1 of their employees when you retire. seriously, see a good lawyer. your employer screwed you.

Your best bet is military training. No airline I know of is offering tuition paid contracts now, especially since your training is craft-specific. You have to be rated for each specific aircraft you wish to fly ( for commercial airliners). You may qualify for tuition loans that must be repaid but they can help you get through to multi-engine and jet ratings.

It does NOT cost $70,000. Most flight schools offer PPL, IPL and CPL pilot license in under $50,000.
If you can get to Basair in Australia your training will be even cheaper with Job positions with Regional airlines in AUS.
I was gonna go to Basair first then I decided to do training in Saint Louis.
I do not think many airlines pay for Pilot training. They did when training costs were around $100,000.

Airliners do not do that anymore. Their are 600,000 pilots in the US, they have plenty of people to pick from.
The military will not pay for your training. Its that simple. You must have a college degree first, and even then you have to be absolutely outstanding in every way.

Divide A by B and you will see the number of aspirants wanting what you want per airline. Now write down what you have to offer to make them consider you. Remember many of the applicants have degrees and employment history but laid off due to situations beyond their control. There has never been a company in the history of the US airline industry that has done that. There are (or were) a few national airlines in other countries that had "ab initio" programs for citizens of those countries, but most of those programs have disappeared and getting into them was as hard as becoming a military pilot. Sorry to disappoint you. I paid for all the ratings myself and it took many years to earn the money. I even lived in my car for a couple years to save money for flying instead of rent. Like me, you can do it without financial backing if you really want to, but it takes time, dedication, and sacrafice to get there.

I too agree with contacting EEOC but after you get that offer in writting. The problem working contract is you have to pay taxes the company would have had to pay unless they pay you cash. You do not need a business lic to be a 1099 employee. On finding your own customers, you most likely know who uses your services so you call on them and indrodce yourself and you can sell it as the owner and the one who services them. Get Business cards, letterhead and insurance. Remember you need to sell to the buyer not the info taker.
